Drug Project
In this project each group researched a different drug/drug category, and created an interactive activity. My group researched opium, for our interactive we made a board game about opium addiction called "Opium Adventure" My specific role in this project was creating the physical game board. I designed the layout of the game and created what would eventually be laser cut into the wood. I also painted in each space on the board including the spots for the cards. I designed the layout for both sets of cards that were used in the game play, and cut out the majority of the cards.
For our game the player could either choose to be on opium or not on opium. If they picked to be on opium, they would have to pay $10 for 50 opium, the catch was that with every turn the price of opium increased by $10. The goal of this aspect of the game was to show that opium looks good in the beginning but eventually its disadvantages will out weigh the advantages. In the game each space correlated to a different action, landing on a blue space meant that you draw two fact cards, a red space meant that you draw a situation card, a gray space meant that you go to jail, purple spaces had instructions written on them, and white spaces meant that nothing happened. At the end of the game we tested peoples knowledge with a lightning round, each fact card had the answer to one of the questions, for each correct question the player got $50. At the end whoever had the most money won the game. The part of the game I am most proud of is the final game, I put quite a bit of time into hand painting every line. I was quite pleased with the final product. The final game board ended up looking quite clean considering that I had to paint every line by hand without any guide. If I could do this project over agian I would have used blue tape to tape off the game board before we cut it, this would have created a stencil of each space that needed to be painted. This would have allowed the paint to be much cleaner and the whole process much less time consuming. I would have done a different color scheme on the game board if I could do it agian, the color scheme we ended up going with looked quite patriotic, if given the chance to do it over I would have used white, gray, blue, and green as the main colors of the game. I would have also tried to make the game a bit more straight forward, it was somewhat difficult to keep track of what was happening with each player. It would have been very helpful to have opium and money as two different things, I noticed that people got kinda confused when the drugs and money were the same thing. I also would have tried to balance out the game mechanics a bit more, it always seemed like choosing to be on opium had an advantage. When players decided not to be on opium there was no way for them to gain any money. |
